Weather Update Scorching Heat Hits Portland with Potential for Record Temperatures and Fire Risks

Intense heat is now present and there is a possibility of records being broken during the weekend.

“In the last 30 years, Portland records show that no day in September has ever recorded a high temperature above 98. That record is in jeopardy tomorrow!” Storm Tracker 2 Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby said.

The projected high temperatures for Thursday and Friday are 101 degrees and 100 degrees, respectively, according to Shelby’s forecast.

The maximum day temperature recorded in September 1988 at Portland International Airport was 105 degrees.

“There is higher fire danger for our surrounding area on Thursday and Friday due to stronger east wind, heat, and low humidity,” Shelby stated.

For Thursday, the National Weather Service in Portland has not only issued a “Excessive Heat Warning” but also a “Fire Weather Watch.” Out of the Northeast, winds will blow at speeds ranging from 5 to 10 mph, with gusts reaching up to 20 mph. The relative humidity is expected to be modest, ranging from 20 to 30%.

There is a “Red Flag Warning” issued for the Western Columbia River Gorge. Easterly winds are expected to range from 10 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 MPH.

“Conditions may be favorable for rapid fire spread which may threaten life and property. Use extra caution with potential ignition sources, especially in grassy areas. Outdoor burning is not recommended,” the agency said.

There will be designated facilities in Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties where inhabitants can seek shelter from the high temperatures.
