Weekend Alert: Widespread Severe Weather and Tornado Risks Set to Hit Over 12 States This Weekend

Weekend Alert Widespread Severe Weather and Tornado Risks Set to Hit Over 12 States This Weekend

Following at least three significant storms this month that brought snow, strong winds, and a severe weather outbreak, AccuWeather meteorologists caution that another storm of this type is expected to make an appearance before the end of March.

The first of these storms intensified on March 3 and ended on March 5. The second took place from March 14–16. Late March 18–19 was when the third significant storm was most concentrated.

More than 220 tornadoes and about 1,900 occurrences ranging from high winds to hail have been reported from the three big storms.

There are over four times as many tornadoes and roughly twice as many severe weather events as there were in March 2024.

More tornadoes and other severe weather events occurred during the storm that lasted from March 14–16 alone than for the entire month of March 2024.

This month is probably going to see a much greater trend in the frequency of severe weather events, including tornadoes.

There will be more severe weather soon

This weekend, there is a chance of a fresh, sizable region of severe weather developing across the central United States.

The stronger storm forming to the west will be challenged later on Saturday by a southern-tracking storm that will provide drought relief and flooding rain to parts of Texas from Thursday to Friday.

At first, this storm may deprive the larger storm of moisture and warmth.

The amount of sunshine, moisture, and warmth that accumulates in the area could, however, cause the lid to lift from severe weather over the Mississippi Valley after that Southern system moves east.

On Sunday, more than a dozen states will see severe weather, which could include tornadoes, huge hail, and devastating wind gusts. There is a chance of severe weather in some areas of the East through Monday, depending on the storm’s path.

Meanwhile, another round of powerful wind gusts that can throw up dust and raise the risk of wildfire may occur this weekend in the storm’s southern corridor.

Rainfall from the storms on Thursday and Friday, as well as any rain from the new storm on Saturday, does not reach parts of the southern High Plains.

Like a number of other storms this month, a swath of snow and wintry mix will develop farther north on the storm’s northern edge.

Central Colorado, eastern Wyoming, portions of the Dakotas, Minnesota, and the northern regions of Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, and New England may all see wintry precipitation.
