White House Press Secretary Identifies Joe Biden as Former President

WASHINGTON — White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre referred to President Biden as “former President Biden” during a press briefing on Air Force One this week. The slip occurred while Jean-Pierre was discussing Biden’s attendance at Ethel Kennedy’s funeral and a conversation he had with former President Barack Obama.

“We have said many times the president and — and president — and former President Biden — they have a very close relationship,” Jean-Pierre said before quickly moving on without addressing the misstatement. The comment was made as she responded to a question about whether she had spoken to Biden about his discussion with Obama at the event.

Jean-Pierre noted that Biden “appreciated being there” at the funeral, describing Kennedy as an “incredible force” and emphasizing the significance of her life and contributions to the country. The press secretary did not elaborate on the exchange between Biden and Obama, citing the hectic schedule aboard the plane.

The inadvertent reference to Biden as a former president has drawn some attention, though the White House has not commented further on the matter. Jean-Pierre did not revisit the error during the remainder of the briefing.
