On her birthday episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg celebrated with her co-hosts and some classic Charlotte Russe desserts, a nostalgic New York treat that was her mother’s favorite. But things quickly took a twist when Goldberg claimed the bakery that made these desserts had initially refused her order, allegedly due to her political views.

Without naming the bakery, Whoopi explained that when she first reached out for the sweets, she got turned down. The reason she was reportedly given? Their ovens were down. But Goldberg wasn’t buying it, hinting that her outspoken political beliefs were the true reason behind the refusal.

“I’m not telling you who made them,” Whoopi teased, though the bakery was later identified as Holtermann’s Bakery on Staten Island—a 145-year-old family business known for its delicious, old-school baked goods. Holtermann explained to Entertainment Weekly that her reason for the initial “no” had nothing to do with politics. The bakery’s ancient building was experiencing boiler issues, and with ovens affected, she worried about over-promising on an order she might not be able to fulfill.

According to Holtermann, when Goldberg’s team reached out again, she was able to whip up 50 Charlotte Russe treats just in time for Whoopi’s on-air birthday celebration.
