Key Largo, FloridaFollowing a violent domestic argument, a Florida man stole a sheriff’s patrol car, carjacked an innocent driver, and caused a wreck in Key Largo, leaving local enforcement panicking. Following the tumultuous series of events that started Sunday afternoon, 52-year-old Armando Lopez, the suspect, is currently facing numerous criminal accusations.
Domestic Violence Incident in Key Largo
Around 4:25 p.m. on Sunday, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of domestic violence at a home on Palm Drive in Key Largo. When deputies got there, they discovered Lopez reportedly abusing a female adult inside the house. Lopez allegedly snatched a responding Sergeant’s service weapon out of its holster during a violent altercation and punched the officer in an attempt to take it away.
Lopez escaped the scene in spite of the officer’s efforts, and a deputy tried to use a Taser on him. But Lopez kept eluding capture, running into Key Largo’s streets.
Stolen Patrol Vehicle and Carjacking
Lopez swiftly upped his next action. He allegedly stole a sheriff’s patrol car after escaping the scene of the domestic abuse. After driving the designated cruiser, Lopez pulled over a female driver of a Kia SUV and told her to get out. He grabbed the SUV and drove quickly north on U.S. 1.
When Lopez rear-ended another car and the Kia flipped, the scenario took a risky turn. Although the car was severely damaged in the collision, no serious injuries were reported.
Arrest and Multiple Charges
After the collision, Lopez was then transported to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier for medical care. He was charged with a long list of offenses after receiving treatment, including false imprisonment, attempted murder, resisting arrest, grand theft auto, fleeing and eluding, impersonating a law enforcement official, burglary of an emergency vehicle, carjacking, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of a firearm or ammunition by a felon, driving with a suspended driver’s license, and domestic violence by strangulation.
Sheriff Rick Ramsay expressed relief that the situation didn t result in life-threatening injuries, stating, I am relieved there were no life-threatening injuries caused by this incident and the suspect is currently where he needs to be sitting in jail.
He also emphasized the constant dangers faced by law enforcement, saying, It is a reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers routinely face while simply doing their jobs.
