Wyandanch man indicted for stabbing spree at Hempstead house party

MINEOLA, N.Y.Following an alleged stabbing spree at a house party in Hempstead that left five people with potentially fatal injuries, a Wyandanch man has been charged with several offenses, including five counts of attempted murder.

Judge Christopher Quinn arraigned Moses Brooks, 50, on a 23-count indictment in Nassau County on Friday. Assault, sexual abuse, reckless endangerment, attempted murder, possession of a weapon, and witness tampering are among the charges. The bail amounts were $2.5 million partially secured bond, $1 million bond, or $500,000 cash.

At around 6:30 a.m. on October 6, 2024, at a basement party on Linden Place in Hempstead, the violence broke out. Before being evicted from the house by other guests, prosecutors claim that Brooks sexually assaulted a 26-year-old woman during the party. After leaving the house, Brooks is charged with starting a verbal altercation, drawing a knife, and randomly stabbing partygoers who were gathered in the front yard.

Anne T. Donnelly, the district attorney for Nassau County, stated that five of the victims had extensive cuts, damaged arteries, and nerve damage that need immediate surgery. After a slice to her radial artery, one woman lost the use of her hand, and other victims experienced lifelong loss of mobility. Vital arteries were in danger of being severed by the cuts to another victim’s neck.

DA Donnelly claimed that this defendant savagely and indiscriminately slashed and stabbed partygoers during an alleged stabbing spree outside of a house party. Nassau County will not tolerate this kind of indiscriminate, vicious assault.

After getting off an aircraft from Florida, Brooks ran away and was taken into custody at LaGuardia Airport over two weeks later on October 19. According to authorities, Brooks tried to bribe victims with money after his detention in order to keep them from assisting prosecutors.

Each attempted murder accusation carries a maximum penalty of 25 years to life in prison for Brooks, in addition to further possible punishments for other charges.

Under the direction of County Court Trial Bureau Chief Ali Ajamu, Senior Litigation Counsel Joseph Grasso is prosecuting the case. Christopher Cassar, Brooks’ lawyer, has entered a not guilty plea to all of the accusations.
