16-year-old Driver Without License Causes Deadly Crash in Las Vegas, Killing Two Men

A 16-year-old driver without a license is accused of causing a deadly car crash that claimed the lives of two men on Sept. 21, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. The teenager was driving a GMC Yukon Denali at the time of the accident, with an 11-year-old passenger in the car.

The collision occurred around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Lamb Boulevard and Kell Lane. Police believe speed was a significant factor in the crash. The teen’s vehicle reportedly struck a Nissan on the driver’s side as it attempted to cross North Lamb Boulevard.

The occupants of the Nissan, a 67-year-old driver and a 54-year-old passenger, were both killed in the impact. This tragic incident marks the 109th and 110th traffic fatalities in the Las Vegas Metro area for 2024, surpassing the 102 deaths recorded during the same time in 2023.

Eyewitness Accounts

Nearby residents, Samantha Martin and her partner, heard the collision and rushed to the scene. “We heard a big boom, and we kind of heard dragging,” said Martin. “We saw people trying to resuscitate those in the Nissan.”

Martin also noted that the 16-year-old driver and the 11-year-old passenger stayed at the scene after the crash. “We helped out the little kid. He was in shock, so we gave him water and helped him calm down until his parents arrived,” she added.

Expert Commentary

Erin Breen, the director of the Road Equity Alliance Project at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), commented on the incident: “Any time you have a situation where one vehicle is speeding and the other is moving slowly, the lower-speed vehicle occupants are often the ones who lose their lives. We have a terrible speeding problem in our community, and it’s costing us more and more lives on the road.”
