22-year-old charged with first-degree murder in DC shooting

Washington, D.C. In relation to the October 23, 2024, shooting in Southeast D.C. that left one guy dead and another gravely injured, a man has been taken into custody.

The gunshot occurred in the 2300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast, at around 11:43 a.m. When Sixth District officers arrived, they discovered two guys with gunshot wounds. Antonio Kojesus Riley, 44, of Southeast D.C., passed away from his wounds after both victims were taken to a nearby hospital. Due to severe injuries, the second victim is still in the hospital.

On December 20, 2024, 22-year-old Dawayne Smith, also from Southeast, was taken into custody by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force (CARFTF) after an investigation. Smith has been charged with first-degree murder while armed and was taken into custody based on an arrest warrant issued by the D.C. Superior Court.

Detectives and local law enforcement partners are credited by the Metropolitan Police Department with making the arrest. The shooting is still under investigation.
