Jackson Police Department announces return of K-9 program, welcomes new special officers

Jackson, New Jersey. During a ceremony at the township council meeting on Tuesday, the Jackson Police Department welcomed two new K-9 officers and Class II Special Police Officers and announced the reintroduction of its K-9 squad.

Chief Matthew Kunz, Public Safety Director Joseph Candido, and other department heads presented K-9 Robbie and K-9 Brix to the Jackson community. Additionally, K-9 Robbie was named in honor of Officer Robert Ventura, who was killed in 2001 while performing his duties.

In attendance to mark the event, the Ventura family was presented with a plaque honoring Officer Ventura’s service. K-9 Robbie highlighted the importance of the dedication by sharing a moving moment with the Ventura family.

The Remembering Brian Kanterman Foundation, which contributed $20,000 to finance the purchase and supplies of K-9 Robbie, was also honored at the ceremony. The foundation was established in honor of Kanterman, a dog lover and future K-9 officer who passed away at the age of 25 while performing his duties.

Other plaques were given to trainers Sgt. Keith DeLucca and Officer Ed Joos of the New Jersey Transit Police K-9 training program, who helped the officers prepare for the rigorous 23-week training, and retired Sgt. Theodore Kucowski, for his efforts in starting the K-9 program.

Additionally, two new Class II Special Police Officers were presented. Mason Kinlan, a Jackson native and recent Jackson Memorial High School alumnus, is a law enforcement officer like his parents. Michael Pratt, a native of Staten Island, is carrying on a family custom that was started by his mother, a 9/11 first responder and former NYPD officer.

The community and supporters were thanked by the Jackson Police Department for their contributions to the growth of the department.
