SAN DIEGO, CA—A guy wanted by Interpol was recently taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol authorities in San Diego, California, marking a landmark arrest. Agents made the arrest on January 3, 2025, following a regular immigration stop close to Dulzura, California, which is located just north of the border between the United States and Mexico. An international law enforcement achievement swiftly emerged from what appeared to be a routine interaction.
A Routine Stop Leads to a Shocking Discovery
While on patrol north of the border, agents from the U.S. Border Patrol’s San Diego Sector saw a suspicious SUV driving on State Route 94.
Agents found that both of the car’s passengers were in the country illegally during the immigration inspection. Additionally, it was found that the driver had overstayed his visa and was therefore in the country illegally.
The driver, a Spanish national, was not only in the United States illegally but also the target of an Interpol Red Notice, according to additional checks conducted by the agents as they processed the individuals at a nearby Border Patrol station. In order to prevent more legal action, this international alert asked law enforcement agencies worldwide to find and detain the person.
Interpol s Red Notice and International Cooperation
A request for the location and temporary arrest of an individual pending extradition or legal proceedings is known as an Interpol Red Notice, and it is sent to law enforcement worldwide. The arrest warrant or court order from the nation that submitted the request—in this example, Spain—is the basis for issuing this notice.
The Red Notice was issued because officials sought the Spanish guy in question for allegedly sexually abusing a kid.
Based on the same Red Notice, the U.S. Marshals Service and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were aggressively looking for the driver and were connected to his criminal history. In order to capture a fugitive who was trying to elude justice, agencies’ worldwide collaboration was essential.
Legal Actions Taken After the Arrest
Agents from the U.S. Border Patrol confiscated the SUV after the arrest and processed the other two passengers for deportation.
In order to guarantee that the appropriate legal measures would be taken for the man’s extradition or other legal processes, authorities swiftly informed Interpol of his detention.
