ALTADENA, CAAfter returning from an evacuation during the Eaton Fire, a resident in Altadena, California, was met by an intolerable surprise. Under his house, the man found a huge 525-pound bear that was preventing utility workers from turning on the electricity. The next step was a risky attempt to securely remove the enormous animal.
Bear Takes Shelter Underneath Home
When the utility company announced that electricity restoration could not proceed due to an unforeseen visitor beneath the house, Samy Arbid had just returned to his fire-damaged home.
The neighborhood knew the bear, who weighed more than half a ton, and called him Victor or Berry. The bear did not specify his preferred name.
According to Arbid, the bear most likely looked for cover during the fire.
Arbid clarified, “I think he was scared, and I think he pretty much stayed in there during the fire.”
Removing a 525-Pound Problem
In order to handle the situation, a team headed by CDFW Environmental Scientist Kevin Howells put in a lot of effort, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW).
Eight experts discussed their alternatives and evaluated the dangers over the course of a day.
It was deemed unsafe to tranquilize the bear due to its enormous size. The bear’s size and crawlspace were evaluated, and it was determined that chemical immobilization was not an option, according to CDFW.
Rather, a bear trap was placed outside the crawlspace, and an enticing feast was used as bait.
Rotisserie Chicken, Sardines, and More
A variety of delicious foods, such as rotisserie chicken, sardines, apples, peanut butter, tomato sauce, and other goodies, made up the bait.
According to Arbid, they went to Stater Brothers and purchased a variety of items, including rotisserie chicken, sardines, tomato sauce, apples, peanut butter, and more.
For him, they prepared a feast.
It was successful. As intended, the bear tripped the trap door and came out in a matter of minutes.
Safe Release into the Wild
The cute bear was taken to Angeles National Forest after being imprisoned. Shortly after midnight, officials released the bear safely after doing a welfare check, taking measurements, and fitting him with a GPS collar.
Before the bear entered the trap, its face was seen peering out from under the house in pictures released by the CDFW.
Warning to Residents
The crawlspace was secured once the bear was safely moved to avoid any such accidents.
In order to prevent damage and undesired denning, the CDFW encouraged locals who live close to bear areas to seal crawlspaces with bear-proof material, particularly before winter.
