One person was killed after a 21-year-old Milton man is accused of opening fire while driving a motorcycle through Alpharetta’s downtown.

Jaden Lewis was taken into custody on Thursday afternoon and is accused of both aggravated assault and murder.

Wednesday night, at about eleven p.m., there was gunfire along Highway 9 close to Milton Avenue.

The gunman was seen on a motorcycle in many photos obtained by the Alpharetta Police Department. He was dressed in black jeans, a helmet, gloves, and a jacket with white patches. He is seen pointing a gun in one of the pictures. According to police, a witness’s dash cam produced the suspect’s photos.

It was gunfire that struck 46-year-old Justin Mourning. After being brought to a nearby hospital, he passed away.

Following the shooting, police said they spoke with various witnesses and discovered numerous shot casings. Investigators think there was an altercation before the shooting.

“It appears that this shooting incident escalated from an argument that occurred between the victim and a motorcycle operator,” said Captain Andrew Splawn of the Alpharetta Police Department. “The altercation and incident occurred in the roadway.”

On Friday morning, Jaden Lewis opted out of his initial court appearance.

The shooting on Wednesday night took place in a typically calm part of Alpharreta’s downtown.

“We’re just always disappointed when we hear about any kind of crime in the area and this is particularly bad,” said Mark Bundy.

“It makes you a little uncomfortable, but it definitely makes you keep your guard up when you’re out and about,” said Lydia Tessfaye.

According to detectives, shootings in Alpharetta’s downtown are uncommon.

“This incident is unusual,” Spawn said. “Based on the argument that occurred before the shooting, we do believe that it’s isolated.”

According to Bundy’s son, who works nearby, this violence is distressing.

“Anger was my first thought that I don’t want that happening in my city,” he said. “There’s nothing going on that’s worth dying for.”
