Jason Mewes Explains That Unforgettable “Jersey Smell” and Nostalgia

RED BANK, N.J. — Actor Jason Mewes recently reflected on the sensory memories tied to his home state of New Jersey, describing how the distinct smells of the region evoke a powerful sense of nostalgia for him. In a video message, Mewes explained that whenever he returns to the area where he grew up, the scents of the changing seasons, ocean breeze, and local life bring back vivid memories from his childhood.

Mewes, known for his role as “Jay” in the “Jay and Silent Bob” films, spoke from Red Bank, near the iconic comic book store Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. He described how the combination of crisp autumn air, burning fireplaces, and the aroma of nearby restaurants uniquely characterize New Jersey.

“Right now we’re in fall,” he said, emphasizing the importance of seasonal transitions. “There’s falls in the trees and the trees, and the ocean, the water coming off the ocean because we grew up on the shore and stuff.”

He expressed how these sensory experiences trigger an emotional response, drawing memories from his upbringing. “I always get these flashbacks of me as a kid doing this or doing that,” he said, noting that the smells of New Jersey consistently prompt a rush of nostalgia.

Despite now living in Los Angeles, Mewes admitted that there are elements of New Jersey he continues to miss. “I love LA, but I miss things about Jersey,” he stated, acknowledging the unique connection he feels to his roots. He ended the video by inviting others to share if they experience similar rushes of memories sparked by familiar scents.
