House Sitter Evacuates Home With Pets, Police Suspect Arsonist

DOVER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Police are investigating an arson and a separate shooting incident that occurred early Friday morning in the 4700 block of Carlisle Road. The events took place at a residence in Dover Township, where a house sitter reported being awakened by the homeowner’s barking dog.

The Northern York County Regional Police Department said a 37-year-old woman, who was housesitting for the homeowner, heard several loud popping sounds shortly after the dog began barking. Upon looking out of a second-floor bedroom window, she observed flames at the rear of the first floor of the home, according to police.

The woman successfully evacuated the homeowner’s dog and cat, securing them in her car, before fire crews arrived to extinguish the blaze. Officials reported that the fire caused significant damage to the back of the residence.

While police were on the scene, a neighboring resident approached officers to report that the three loud popping noises heard were gunshots. Police located three rounds inside the neighbor’s home: two in the living room and one in the kitchen. Authorities recovered three .40 caliber shell casings from the roadway in front of the residence. No injuries were reported in the shooting incident.

Surveillance footage from a nearby intersection showed a single vehicle on the roadway at the time of the incidents. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding the vehicle or the incidents to contact the Northern York County Regional Police Department at 717-467-8355 or via email at [email protected].
