Two Maryland women charged in alleged murder-for-hire plot targeting ex-boyfriend

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — Two women have been arrested and charged in connection with a murder-for-hire scheme allegedly aimed at killing one of the suspects’ former romantic partners, according to Montgomery County Police. Adelaida Consuelo Zacarias Chacon, 53, of Germantown, and Reyna Gomez Lopez, 40, of Philadelphia, are facing charges of first-degree conspiracy to commit murder.

Police say the investigation began on June 28, 2024, when a case worker at the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Family Justice Center reported that Zacarias Chacon had allegedly tried to hire someone to murder her ex-boyfriend. Detectives with the Major Crimes Division then uncovered communications suggesting Zacarias Chacon had enlisted the help of her former sister-in-law, Gomez Lopez, to facilitate the plan.

According to police, Zacarias Chacon allegedly paid Gomez Lopez $1,000 to find someone willing to carry out the killing. Detectives reportedly obtained evidence of the payment, including a bank transfer confirming the $1,000 transaction between the two women.

Both suspects were apprehended by Montgomery County Task Force Officers assigned to the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. Zacarias Chacon has been charged with first-degree conspiracy to commit murder and first-degree solicitation to commit murder and is currently held at the Central Processing Unit, awaiting a bond hearing. Gomez Lopez, who also faces a first-degree conspiracy to commit murder charge, is awaiting extradition to Montgomery County.
