Absecon man sentenced to eight years for dealing meth out of Atlantic City hotel

New Jersey’s Mays Landing. On Tuesday, officials sentenced a 47-year-old Absecon man to eight years in New Jersey State Prison for his involvement in a methamphetamine distribution ring operating out of the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City.

The Honorable Donna Taylor, J.S.C., sentenced Michael E. Hayes to second-degree conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine. In addition, Hayes consented to give up $6,417.50 in confiscated US money. His current 60-year jail sentence for first-degree robbery, home invasion, and associated offenses will run concurrently with his new sentence. Hayes is not eligible for parole until he has completed 85% of his sentence under the No Early Release Act.

The narcotics charges are related to a search warrant that was issued on December 16, 2020, as part of an investigation into Hayes’ home invasion. Hayes’ secondary apartment in room 1921 of the Showboat Hotel on the Atlantic City Boardwalk was searched by SWAT members of the Atlantic City Police Department, Franklin Township Police Department, and Atlantic County HIDTA Task Force.

In addition to 4.8 grams of suspected fentanyl/heroin and 12.6 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine, investigators also found a variety of equipment used in drug manufacture, including as mixers, digital scales, cutting agents, vacuum sealers, and empty heroin folds. The hotel room also had a fully loaded 50-round high-capacity ammunition magazine that contained hollow-point bullets. Hayes was connected to the room by evidence like payment receipts and correspondence with his name on them.

Hayes’ sentencing highlights his role in serious criminal activities in Atlantic County and adds to the lengthy jail term he is currently serving. Local law enforcement agencies and the Atlantic County HIDTA Task Force carried out the investigation.
