Elmont man sentenced to 25 years to life for murder of girlfriend in Mineola penthouse

MINEOLA, N.Y. Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly said Thursday that an Elmont man who shot his girlfriend dead inside her penthouse apartment in July 2022 was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.

On September 26, 2024, a jury found Mark Small, 57, guilty of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a firearm in connection with the death of Marivel Estevez, 39, a management employee at the Allure Mineola apartment complex where she resided.

“Today’s sentence reflects the seriousness of this callous and senseless act of violence,” DA Donnelly stated, referring to Mark Small’s shooting death of his fiancĂ©e inside her own apartment. We hope that everyone impacted by Marivel’s terrible loss may find some closure with this defendant’s sentencing.

According to the prosecution, sometime between the evening of July 28, 2022, and the early hours of July 29, 2022, Small shot Estevez once in the head and once in the arm. He took her dog, Tuffy, with him when he departed the scene in Estevez’s vehicle. When Estevez failed to show up for work, coworkers called the police for a welfare check, and on July 30, 2022, they discovered her dead on her bed.

On August 2, 2022, while receiving treatment at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset following an automobile accident while pursuing Tuffy on the Long Island Expressway, Small was taken into custody.
