Hempstead man arraigned for fatal shooting after argument during card game

MINEOLA, N.Y. — A Hempstead man was arraigned on murder charges Friday, accused of fatally shooting another man following an argument at a gathering in September, Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced.

Kane Moore, 30, faces charges of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Moore, who pleaded not guilty, was remanded and is scheduled to appear in court again on November 22. If convicted, he could face a sentence of up to 40 years to life in prison.

The incident occurred in the early hours of September 21, 2024, in the rear parking lot of 134 Yale Street in Hempstead. According to prosecutors, Moore, Maurice Sinclair Thomas, and a group of friends were playing cards when an argument broke out between Moore and Thomas. During the altercation, Moore allegedly pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and shot Thomas in the left side.

Thomas was transported to NYU Langone Long Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:37 a.m. Moore reportedly fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

Following a month-long search, Moore was apprehended on October 21 in Detroit, Michigan, by the Detroit Police Department and the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force. He was extradited to Nassau County on October 31.

“A simple gathering among friends turned deadly when this defendant allegedly pulled a gun during a card game and ended Maurice Sinclair Thomas’ life,” said DA Donnelly. “This senseless crime highlights the devastating impact of illegal guns in our communities. We are committed to holding defendants accountable for their wanton violence.”

The case is being prosecuted by Senior Litigation Counsel Stefanie Palma of the Nassau County Homicide Bureau, with oversight from Bureau Chief Jared Rosenblatt and Executive Assistant District Attorney Kevin Higgins. Moore is represented by defense attorney Mindy Plotkin.
