Major Virginia Company Announces 200 Job Cuts Amid Decline in Business

Sentara Health informed its staff this week about the elimination of around 200 jobs due to a decrease in enrollments in the Sentara Health Plan.

According to a statement released on Friday, the 200 positions account for approximately 1% of Sentara’s total workforce of 34,000 employees. Nonetheless, some employees in those roles will retain their jobs. Sentara announced plans to assist affected employees in securing new positions within the organization.

Most of the job cuts are occurring in Virginia, specifically in the Sentara Health Plans department. Job cuts will also occur in nine additional states. Sentara indicated that the positions available cover various levels, with 40% designated for leadership roles.

Sentara reported that the Medicaid redetermination process, which reassessed eligibility for the state-funded healthcare program, led to a notable decrease in Medicaid membership both nationally and in Virginia.

The company reported that Sentara Health Plans experienced a loss of around 115,000 members, equating to roughly 16% of their total membership. Sentara announced that the workforce reductions are a result of decreased enrollment.

Sentara expressed their intention to assist affected employees in securing new positions within the organization. They are striving to provide severance or to equip employees with new skills for advancement opportunities.

“These individuals have been dedicated and mission-driven team members and we are grateful for their passion and contributions to the organization and to the community,” said Sentara Health CEO Dennis Matheis.
